Mascot and medals of The 2016 Women’s World Boxing Championships are revealed

50 days before the start of the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana the mascot and medals of the championships are revealed.

They were presented to the fans by the bronze medalist of the 2012 Olympic Marina Volnova and a member of the national women's boxing team, Dina Zholaman, the six-time champion of Kazakhstan.

“I believe our girls will be successful”, said Marina Volnova, the Ambassador of the Championships, “Everyone has got a chance. Of course, much depends on the draw. But, I think, whoever they may chance to fight with, everything will be fine and they will win prizes".

The women boxers will be hailed and supported in Astana by Maya the squirrel, a friendly and graceful creature in boxing gloves. Its main task is to show the hospitality and make the sportswomen from different countries feel at home in the Kazakhstani capital, and not to lose their morale under any circumstances. Fast as a lightning and elegant Maya embodies the beauty and speed of women's boxing and intends to become the main cheerleader in the championship.

The sketches of medals are developed by Kazakhstani designers. Each medal weighs about 110 grams. A disc with of 8 cm in diameter and 4 mm thick is decorated with curly through slots. The medals intended for sportswomen who will win the first place are covered with an alloy in which contains real gold.

The design of the awards used traditional Kazakh zoomorphic patterns. In ancient times the things decorated with similar ornaments were used as a mascot that would bring strength and good luck to its owner.

On the front side there is the Championships logo made of colored Italian enamel - a girl in boxing gloves. She is surrounded by lines symbolizing the lights of fame and stars. The inscription on the medal also made from colored enamel reads: “AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships Astana 2016”. On the reverse side there are logos of AIBA and Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. On the tape, also decorated with Kazakh ornament and made in the traditional ‘boxing colors’ - red and blue the inscriptions “AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships” and “Astana 2016” are put.

The Championships open in Astana on May 19 and will last till May 27. It will take place in the Barys Arena complex and 294 sportswomen from 67 countries will take part in it.
